There is a fabulous program right here in Fort Bend County called the Foster Grandparent Program.
The purpose is to provide income-eligible adults (age 55 and older) with meaningful volunteer opportunities while serving children with exceptional needs. The program is mostly funded by the Corporation of National Community Service, and they’ve been around since 1965. There are 17 of these programs in the state of Texas, one right here in neighboring Richmond. The program here is administered by Texas Health and Human Services. These Foster Grandparents provide one-on-one emotional support, mentoring and tutoring kids with varying needs. They are role models and friends and often form lifelong relationships. The volunteers meet the kids at school, daycare or any other child-centered facility.
