The holidays are approaching, have you started your shopping yet? If not, kick it off by shopping local at the annual Sienna Gingerbread Market, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.
The annual market is a Fort Bend tradition where the smallest of small businesses gather to offer unique items you won’t find at the local shopping mall. You’ll also have a chance to talk directly to the owners — many of whom are residents of Sienna. They are passionate about what they do and love to tell stories about how they started their businesses.
We’re talking about people like Gerdi Rone of 4 Paws Gourmet Dog Treats. Customers have been stopping by her booth for years, picking up all-natural locally baked canine treats, healthy chews and freshly shed Elk antlers from Colorado.
“I had to retire from my job of 20 years due to illness so I tried many things I could do from home,” Gerdi said. “I decided the food and treats my dogs were getting were full of carcinogenic chemicals, so I started baking and trying different recipes that are healthy. Seven years later I'm still at it. I loooove my furry customers.”
4 Paws’ food and treats are human-grade food quality with no preservatives, sodium or dyes. Gerdi also bakes custom pooch cakes for birthdays, weddings and other events.
In addition to being a vendor, Gerdi is a Sienna resident.
“We have been a part of this great community for 13 years and we attend any events that are offered to help support the community and improve the health of the dogs around Sienna,” she said.
Dog treats aren’t the only unique items you’ll discover at this year’s Gingerbread Market. Shoppers hoping to pick up something special for the wine enthusiasts in their lives will discover no shortage of items at Lee’s Laser Creations.
Deb Norton is a graphic laser designer that specializes in All Things Wine — the name of her webshop. At the Gingerbread Market, customers can get an up-close view of wine bottle-shaped cutting boards, engraved stemless wine glasses, coasters, handmade leather-bound wine tasting journals and leather bottle carriers.
“My family lives in Sienna Plantation and we wanted to support the community,” Deb said. “As with most markets and festivals, you get to meet such nice people — vendors as well as patrons — and you look forward to seeing them each year. This market is very well organized and it is a pleasure to be part of this family.”
Meet Gerdi, Deb and all of our other fabulous vendors at the Gingerbread Market located at Club Sienna, 9600 Scanlan Trace E. Missouri City, TX 77459. Admission is free with the donation of at least one canned good for the Sacred Heart food pantry.
