Students learned of the win Thursday during morning announcements.

BROWN BAG FUNDRAISING CHAMPS – Students at Scanlan Oaks Elementary School were the top fundraisers in the “Brown Bag It’ Campaign benefiting Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels. The school raised more than $620. Shown at the award presentation are, bottom row, Becky Wang; top row, Ayomide Fashoro, Lindsey Longuet, Morgan Cox, Fort Bend Seniors’ Kristin Weiss, Scanlan Oaks Asst. Principal Lori Ruckman, Anna Marciano, Caroline MacMillan and Riley Labus.

The award was presented to Assistant Principal Lori Ruckman by Kristin Weiss of Fort Bend Seniors. Scanlan Oaks raised more than $620 to help feed the seniors of Fort Bend County.

“This was the first time we have run this type of campaign at the elementary school level through the Fort Bend and Lamar Consolidated School Districts,” Weiss said. “Brown Bag It Week was a great success; the response we received from the students was overwhelming. It’s nice to know that they will make a difference in combating senior hunger in Fort Bend County.”

The message of the Brown Bag It fundraising campaign was “just $7 per day feeds one senior”.

Students were asked to take their lunch to school, or “brown bag it,” and donate the money they would have otherwise used to purchase a school meal to buy a meal for a senior.

Fort Bend Seniors provides Meals on Wheels services to over 800 seniors daily from seven site locations throughout Fort Bend County and one site in Waller County.

Fort Bend Seniors is the only organization that provides Meals on Wheels to all persons over 60 years of age regardless of income.  Client statistics have shown that 85 percent of the agency’s clients live at or below the poverty level.
