If you are new to the area, you may not have heard of the tunnel system in downtown Houston, but it really is something you might enjoy seeing. Since about half of the year our weather is hot and humid (May through October for the most part), this system of tunnels makes working downtown a bit more enjoyable. These tunnels are air-conditioned and located 20 feet below the surface of the street connecting restaurants, shops and office buildings. This amazing engineering feat connects 95 city blocks. The tunnels are popular enough that in the heat of the summer, you really don’t see huge crowds on the streets. There are only two points of access from the street: Wells Fargo Plaza and the McKinney Garage on Main Street. These tunnels are open weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
